What is Intermodal ?
Intermodal shipping is a method of transporting cargo using multiple modes
of shipping from origin to destination, without any handling of the freight itself while changing modes. Intermodal shipping utilizes special containers
or trailers which allow goods to be moved directly from one mode of transportation to another without having to be repacked. Companies use intermodal shipping to move freight from one location to another in the most efficient, timely, cost effective, and environmentally friendly manner. Transportation modes used in the intermodal shipping method include trucks, railroad, ocean carriers, steamships, and airplanes. The most common combination, however, is truck and rail.
Where are the proposed sites to be developed for Intermodal?
There are 2 sites that we presently know of. One is in Joliet and the other is in Crete. We do not foresee the Joilet site impacting us here in Eastern Will County. The Crete location is however a different story and here are a few facts about this particular site and it's progress.

Plans for the CenterPoint Development Inc. intermodal park in Crete are rolling,
said Eric Gilbert, company vice president for infrastructure and transportation.
The development on some 1,000 acres on the southeast edge of Crete will
be home to an intermodal rail and industrial park used for the transfer of
international or domestic goods between trains and semitrailers from the
southern United States.
The property is located south of Monee Road to Goodenow Road. Bordered
on the east by the CSX/Union Pacific Railroad lines, the property stretches
west about three-fourths of a mile.
The buildings on the land have been demolished, and the past year has been
spent on planning and engineering work, Gilbert said.
The next year months will be spent on bringing water and sewer lines to the
site. CenterPoint plans to break ground this fall and have the major utility
extension completed by spring or next summer, he said.
